First Conversation - At the Door

Millie: Oh… Doctor. I'm so happy to hear your voice.

Millie: I'm glad you're still human. There aren't many left.

[Pause.]

Millie: You've met Grezzo? Oh, good, good. I'll be leaving to stay with him soon, too.

Millie: He didn't tell you? He's a good friend of mine.

Millie: I was really worried about you, you know.

Millie: Stay safe, okay? I'll see you at the Emerald Eye.

First meeting at the Emerald Eye

Millie: Doctor! Come here!

[Hugs the player. Sanity status improves to Excellent.]

Millie: Oh… sorry. I should have asked.

Millie: Hm? You don't mind?

Millie: [bashful chuckle] Well… if you ever need a hug, just ask, alright?

Millie functions as a merchant. The player can hug her to improve their sanity status by 1 level. The player can ask her to comment on events in the city and give them further insight. Her first hug always improves the player's sanity level to Excellent, regardless of current level.

Approaching/Walking by Millie

Millie: I'm glad you're back safe.

Millie: I'm so happy to see you!

Millie: Are you feeling alright?

Millie: Why don't you come sit down by the fire?

Millie: Want me to rub your shoulders?

Millie: Here, take off your coat and relax some. You deserve it.

Millie: Thank you for all you're doing, doctor.

Player seeks to improve sanity

Millie: You look so tired. Come here.

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

Millie: Feel better?

Millie: Long day?

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

Millie: There, there…

Millie: Poor thing…

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

Millie: I'm always here if you need me.

Millie: Here. Relax.

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

Millie: Shh…

Millie: [humming along to the phonograph tune]

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

Lore-Relevant Dialogue

Old Kingdom

Millie: When I was little, Mother Royse told me stories about the Old Kingdom. How the people had angered God, and He had punished them for their hubris, because they messed with things they didn't understand.

Millie: Father Harold said those were just old wives' tales.

Millie: But the Underport and Sootworks folks who came to Church used to whisper about finding Old Kingdom stuff way down in the sewers. No one really took them seriously. It was just a bunch of ancient junk, as far as they were concerned. The scientists knew better.

Millie: …

Millie: Doctor, do you believe in Heaven?

Millie: How about Hell?

Millie: Do you think they found Hell?

Hive

Millie: I did a lot of charity work in the Underport. Lots of sick people. It's hard to be healthy when you work in the wet and the dark.

Millie: They used to say there were things in the pipes. I used to have nightmares about them.

Millie: and then, when they opened up the Old Kingdom…

Millie: People were even sicker. Boils like you've never seen, lungs full of black gunk. Horrible, horrible.

Millie: I wish they'd never opened it up.

Hightown

Millie: I've only been to Hightown a couple times. One time, Sister Agatha had a door slammed in her face when she asked for donations.

Millie: Snobs, the lot of them.

Millie: …but I always wanted to visit the Observatory. Lady Glasswell is — oh. That look on your face… was… um.

Millie: She was very smart. She got interviewed a few times in the local paper.

Millie: When they started bringing up treasures from the Old Kingdom, they asked for her and Lord Glasswell's thoughts. You might find those interviews if you go to the old printing house.

Plague

Millie: Well, it started a little less than a year ago. It wasn’t anything we thought much of at first. Coughs, fevers, nausea and vomiting – that’s how it began. Doctor Thatherson thought it was just the flu.

Millie: Folks in the Underport are always sick. So when they started coughing, we didn’t pay it any mind.

Millie: The sisters would deliver supplies to houses, leaving things outside for the sick, like we’ve always done.

Millie: And then the Sisters started getting sick. And the Huntsmen. The nobles.

Millie: Of course, when the rich started to get sick, that’s when the Mercantile Council started to care.

Millie: Mother Royse said the plague started because there were archaeologists messing around deep in the Underport. They brought something back with them. And then she suspected the Countess was involved somehow, too.

Millie: We tried to do what we could. Delivering supplies, cooking for the ill, making little care packages. Pleading with the Mercantile Council to send for aid.

Millie: Fasting. Prayers to God for help.

Millie: For anyone to help.

Millie: Our prayers were answered… Months too late.

Millie: …

Millie: …I shouldn’t be so bitter. I’m sorry.

Millie: Thank you, Doctor. For trying to help us.

Grezzo

Millie: I've known Grezzo basically my whole life. He's run this shop way longer than I’ve been alive. I think it was a family business. He’s never really said.

Millie: I usually run his errands for him. Pick up his laundry, his bread, run deliveries to people. That type of thing. I’ve done them since I was a little girl.

Millie: He’s a good person, just… eccentric. Hard to pin down. I’ve known him almost all my life and I still feel like I barely scratched the surface with him.

Millie: …I don’t think he trusts many people.

Sylvia

Millie: I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about Countess Sylvia.

Millie: I met her once at a festival when I was little. Very pretty lady, very elegant and refined. Exactly what you’d picture when you hear the word “countess.”

Millie: I was selling some bracelets I'dmade, and she came by the Church's booth. She said my bracelets were really pretty, and she even bought one.

Millie: Mother Royse didn’t seem to like her. I didn’t understand why at the time.

Millie: I don’t know why Countess Sylvia would do this to her city. To us.

Millie: …

Countess and Grezzo

Millie: They seem to have something going on, don’t they?

Millie: Grezzo never liked her. He wouldn’t ever tell me why, he’d just complain about her and whatever she wanted from the Mercantile Council. I guess I know now, huh?

Millie: If you ask me… I think they were a thing at one point. Heheh.

Millie: …Don’t tell Grezzo I said that…

Huntsmen/Woodsmen

Millie: Oh, the Hunters!

Millie: Hey, don’t look at me so strangely. I know they’ve given you a lot of grief, but they used to protect us, you know.

Millie: When I was a little girl, the Church would put together “thank-you baskets” for the huntsmen when they returned from trips out into the woods. They’d come back with lots of fresh meat, foraged goods, pelts for the tailors and tanners. They even gave the nuns a bear skin rug for their bedroom.

Millie: They were rough types, sure, but never evil. Before they fell in with the Countess, they’d always ask us for blessings before hunts, and when they came back with goodies, they’d say our blessings really did the trick.

Millie: …I think they’ve been cursed.

Millie: They look like they’re not people anymore. Don’t you think so?

Millie: Oh, your research shows so?

Millie: Oh…

Dr. Thatherson

Millie: I miss him greatly.

Millie: Oh, yeah. He died pretty early. He was an old man, you know, and he insisted on caring for the sick.

Millie: I really admired that about him.

Millie: I did some apprentice work under him, too. Learned a little bit about the tonics he made. You’ve used them, right? I actually know where the plants that make it up grow!

Millie: Oh, you want me to make you some…?

Millie: That’s sweet, you think I could do as good a job.

Millie: You’re an odd one, Doctor…

If the player approaches Millie in beastform, she reacts poorly, locking herself in her room, and will not hug them again until the next objective is completed. She will come out when the objective is complete and forgive the player.

Approaching in Beastform

Millie: What the hell?

Millie: Stay back!

Millie: (sobbing) Why?

Millie: I can't believe you.

Millie: How could you do this?

Millie, Locked in Her Room

Millie: Using our suffering for your own gain…

Millie: Go away. I don't want to talk to you.

Millie: Go away!

Millie: …

Outside Her Room Again

Millie: …

Millie: Promise me you won't do that again.

Millie: It hurts you. I can see that.

Millie: I… I don't want you to suffer like everyone else has.

Millie: Please.

[Hug. Player's sanity status improves by 1 level.]

If the player attacks Millie, she is protected by a magical shield, like Grezzo. Attacking her five times causes her to permanently lock herself in her room. She will not speak to the player if she is in this state. You don't want that, do you?

Millie: Hey!

Millie: Knock it off!

Millie: What's your problem?!

Millie: Doctor! I thought we were…

Millie: Do you hate me?

Millie: Stop it!

Millie: You bastard!
